A rear daytime sighting of the Rakalis - the native Australian Water Rat. These amazing little creatures have a life style similar to Otters, with webbed hind feet they are just as much at home in the water as on land and feed on yabbies (small fresh water crayfish) and fresh water mussels (Australian fresh water shellfish).

Rakalis - the native Australian Water Rats are superb swimmers and excellent aquatic hunters. As best I can tell, at any one time Redman Bluff Wetlands supports just two Rakalis.

Stories from the heart - from some of our 2022 Exclusive Wildlife Stay participants

From Annamária Rátki - stayed sunmmer 2022/23

I was lucky enough to spend 3 days at Grampians Paradise doing an Exclusive Wildlife Stay. We rellay didn't know what was waiting for us, hidden, by the feet of the Grampians. The wonders started as soon as we arrived, Aidan, the host and owner of Grampians Paradise greated us with a big smile and bunch of cool brochures. Then we went on a little show-around walk. Least that’s how it started. Soon we were distracted by spotting animal after animal, kangaroos, swamp wallabies, an emu and countless birds.

Our stay continued just as magicly as it started. Being the only people at the camp-ground (4 people and Aidan’s family) provided the wild animals with enough peace to come out in big numbers and act as their wild, natural selves. We have seen possums fighting, emu jumping up to reach fruit in high trees and even kangaroos mating. You couldn’t turn a corner without stumbling onto a view of animals. And if you sat down for more than 5 minutes nature surrounded you to it’s fullest. Even while cooking dinner at the camp kitchen spotted pardalotes flew in and out of their nest just by your ear.

Another highlight of our stay was our Guided Night Tour. Aidan got us after dinner (depends on the time of year) ready with strong head-torch and a red light to find our hiding nocturnal friends. The walk was about 2 hours long around the property but time flies when you're having fun. At night it was a whole separate world that came to life. Australia is full of nocturnal creatures and like me most people have little chance of seeing it on their own. On our walk we saw a huge kangaroo mob, counted around 20, bush-tail and ring-tail possums, we scared an emus into sprinting, saw loads of birds and heard the sweet song of frogs.

Of course Aidan didn't forget about us after either. When ever he saw something interesting or found an animal we haven't seen before he came and got us. Or sometimes brought them to us (an especially large caterpillar resting on a branch). His knowledge of the Caravan Park and the animals  elevated our stay. He recognized the birds by flight and song, knew some of the animals by name and had a familiriaty with nature like someone who built it. Because he did. Aidan and his dad Tom built the wetlands that surrounds Grampians Paradise. The series ponds brings a special kind of life and I highly recommend going on some dusk or dawn walks around, trying to spot the pair of rakalis (native water rats, we did manage to see once!).

Doing this stay felt twice as special for me. I'm originally from Hungary, where I grew up being obsessed with Australian wildlife and had Steve Irwin as my personal hero. Then as I grew older I gave up on making it to Australia, it just seemed so far away. Now it's my second time in Australia but seeing the native wildlife never feels less special. I'm an avid nature photographer and staying in Grampians Paradise gave me some photo opportunities that were beyond my imagination. I felt like by day 3 the kangaroos kinda got used to me and they let me walk up to just a few metres away from them. It was incredibly special.

That is how I would describe the stay in general. Incredibly special. I can’t recommend enough if you love nature, want to see and learn about wildlife or you are a wildlife photographer or bird watcher. You will have the best time!

From James Robertson - stayed summer 2022/23

I've stayed at the Grampians Paradise campground many times before and I can easily say that the Exclusive Wildlife Stays are the best way to experience the incredible natural wonder that the grounds hold. Without anyone else around, you really can get up close with the animals and have amazing experiences that you wouldn't have otherwise. Waking up in the morning to see kangaroos and wallabies munching outside and cooking dinner with spotted pardalotes flittering about. I was lucky enough to see native water rats and frogs in the extensive wetlands, which are a true maze of wildlife that you can lose yourself in. I can honestly say that you can see more species of wildlife within the parameters of Grampians Paradise than in the Grampians National Park itself!
